After two periods, the Gophers led 2-0. Connor Kurth forced a mistake and hit John Mittelstadt with a wraparound pass for a tap-in goal at 5:35 of the first period, giving Minnesota a 1-0 lead.

At 7:41 of the second period, the Bobcats scored, bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of Minnesota. They scored with 2:47 left on the clock while on the power play because of a high sticking penalty against Logan Cooley. The game was tied when Quinnipiac sacrificed a goaltender to give the Bobcats a 6-on-4 power play.
When Quinnipiac won the opening face-off in overtime, it took only 10 seconds for the Bobcats to win the game thanks to a goal by Jacob Quillan. He received an excellent assist and scored the game-winning goal after out-running Justen Close.
The Gophers were already behind 2-0 when they started playing tentatively, and it lost them the national title. They had a perfect record (22-0) when leading after two periods this season. Overall, the Bobcats outshot the Gophers 30-15, and in the final two periods, they outshot them 25-8, including 14-2 in the third.
The Gophers haven’t won a national title since the 2002-03 season, and their record in national title games is now 5-8.
Minnesota was the top-seeded team in the tournament and came into Saturday night’s championship game having outscored its first three opponents 19-5. The Gophers’ talent and quickness were no match for Quinnipiac’s veteran leadership and brute force.
