Lance Blanks, a former general manager for the Phoenix Suns and legendary University of Texas Longhorns player, p@ssed away on Wednesday (3 May 2023) in Dallas at 56.

TMZ Sports reports that the findings of multiple autopsies are still outstanding, making it impossible to identify what caused his de@th.

Blanks has been a mainstay in the NBA since he emerged as a collegiate standout for the Texas Longhorns during the 1988–1989 and 1989–1990 seasons.

He played with Travis Mays and Joey Wright as part of the legendary “BMW” guard combination that helped the team reach the Elite Eight in 1990.

In 2007, Blanks was elected into the Texas Hall of Honor after posting career averages of 20.0 ppg, 5.0 RPG, and 3.7 apg.

After that, he was picked first overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 1990 NBA draft and spent the next three years in the NBA before retiring abroad.

“Lance was a light for all those who knew him,” said the NBA executive vice president and head of basketball operations, Joe Dumars, who played with Blanks in Detroit. “It’s been a privilege to have called him one of my closest friends. I’m eternally grateful for all the support he has shown me throughout the years.”

“His legacy will be carried on by his family and all those whose lives he touched for the better. You will be dearly missed, brother.”

After retiring from basketball, Blanks moved into front-office roles, first as an assistant general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers and then as the Phoenix Suns’ general manager. From 2010 through 2013, he served in that capacity with the Suns.
