American former Major League Baseball manager I’m Leyland. Jim Leyland began his baseball career in the 1960s as a Minor League player with the Detroit Tigers. He was born in Perrysburg, Ohio. He also served as the coach of the Montgomery Rebels.
After taking over as manager in 1985, he managed the Pittsburgh Pirates for the next ten years. In 1990 and 1992, he was named National League Manager of the Year while still on the squad. He became the Florida Marlins’ manager in 1997 and led the team to its first World Series victory.
He left the squad in 1998, following the trade or sale of nearly the whole roster to other teams. He spent one season as a player with the Colorado Rockies before taking a managerial position with the Detroit Tigers in 2006. He led the team until his resignation in 2013 and was named the American League Manager of the Year in 2006.
Jim Leyland Wife
In Pittsburgh, Jim Leyland wed Katie Leyland, with whom he shared two children. Jim Leyland has been married to Katie for over thirty years. Even though they are very different in age, their connection has lasted and gotten stronger over time.
Jim’s first marriage ended in divorce after just a few years of marriage to Joanna Grow. The daughter of a steel salesman and a homemaker, Katie O’Connor joined the Pirates as their events coordinator in 1986 just as she was about to complete her master’s degree in sports management.

Katie played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and met Jim Leyland, who had recently filed for divorce. Jim felt a strong attraction to Katie right away and decided he wanted to pursue a relationship with her. After dating for a year, Jim and Katie tied the knot.
Despite a challenging miscarriage, the couple was overjoyed to welcome their children into the world. The Leyland family spent much of their time in Pittsburgh, even though Jim’s managerial job saw them relocate to several different locales.
Leyland and his spouse Katie brought up their two kids, Patrick and Kellie, at their still-present home in the Pittsburgh neighbourhood of Thornburg, Pennsylvania.

Jim Leyland Career Journey
Baseball icon James Richard Leyland accomplished many amazing things that will go down in the annals of the game. Most famously, Leyland led the Florida Marlins to an incredible triumph over the Cleveland Indians in the 1997 World Series.
Before that, in 1990, 1991, and 1992, he won three straight division titles with the Pittsburgh Pirates, demonstrating his managerial prowess. As one of just eleven managers in baseball history to lead three different teams to the postseason, Leyland is a rare breed.
Leyland’s managing career peaked when he and the Detroit Tigers captured the 2006 American League Championship Series. His ability to adjust and think strategically made him the seventh manager in history to win pennants in both the National and American Leagues.
Leyland’s three Manager of the Year Awards—two from the National League (1990 and 1992) and one from the American League (2006)—further demonstrate his aptitude as a manager.
James Richard Leyland was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2024 on December 3, 2023, as a notable honour awarded to him for his exceptional contributions to the game. Receiving this esteemed award is an appropriate way to commemorate a career filled with achievement, leadership and a lasting influence on baseball.
In addition to winning two Manager of the Year titles in 1990 and 1992, Leyland led the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1986 to 1996. He also had a significant influence on the development of future All-Stars including Barry Bonds, Jay Bell, Tim Wakefield, Andy Van Slyke, and Bobby Bonilla.
However, despite his achievements, Leyland’s relationship with the Pirates was strained in the mid-1990s due to a fire sale that was prompted by new ownership.
