Willie Hugh Nelson was born on April 30, 1933, in Depression-era Abbot, Texas. He is best known for his classic ballads (“Always On My Mind”), autobiographical road songs (“On the Road Again”), and infectious rhythms (“Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”). He is the son of mechanic Ira Doyle Nelson and Myrle Marie (Greenhaw).
He and his sister Bobbie Lee were reared by their gospel-singing paternal grandparents following his parents’ divorce, during which his mother went to Oregon and his father remarried. When Willie was six years old and working in the cotton fields, he received his first guitar. Soon after, he was penning terrible country tunes and performing in polka bands.
He performed in honky-tonks and high school dances when he was a teenager. By the time of his graduation, he was a DJ with his own radio programme and had a job at a nearby radio station.

Nelson, who is now 87 years old, has struggled with his health recently. He postponed a handful of shows in 2019 because of a “breathing condition.” Nelson later said that he had been given the diagnosis with emphysema, a lung ailment that makes breathing challenging. To focus on his health, he also said that he would be reducing his travelling schedule.

Nelson has carried on with his singing career despite these obstacles. He launched a new record in 2020 called “First Rose of Spring,” and he also promised a tour, but the COVID-19 epidemic forced him to postpone it. Nelson has been forthcoming about his difficulties with emphysema as well as a history of back problems, a collapsed lung, and a hip replacement. I Don’t Know a Thing About Love, the follow-up to THE PROLIFIC WILLIE Nelson’s 2022 album A Beautiful Time, which Rolling Stone called one of the finest country albums of the year, will be released on March 3 via Legacy Recordings. I Don’t Know a Thing About Love serves as a tribute CD to country music legend and Hall of Fame member Harlan Howard, who famously characterised the genre as “three chords and the truth.”
With his current release of “Busted,” Nelson gives the album a sneak peek. “Busted” rumbles along with bluesy sadness and the distinctive harmonica of veteran Family Band member Mickey Raphael. Willie sings, telling everyone why he’s been caught: “I had a cow that went dry and a hen that won’t lay, a large stack of money that gets greater every day.”
Nelson, who will age 90 on April 29, collaborated once again with producer Buddy Cannon on the song “I Don’t Know a Thing About Love.” It’s Nelson’s most recent songwriter tribute CD, with 10 songs by Howard. He published Cindy Walker’s song collection You Don’t Know Me in 2006, and Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin was released in 2016.
Nelson is the focus of a brand-new documentary, Willie Nelson & Family, which has its world premiere this week at Sundance.
