Union Cabinet prepare for reunification of Delhi’s 3 civic bodies, 2012-era MCD ready to be back

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday cleared the bill to merge the three municipal corporations in the national capital into one, as it used to be until 2012.

The Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2022 is likely to be tabled in the Parliament in the ongoing session, which is scheduled to end by 8 April, as told by a senior government official.

The proposed step led to a tussle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is in-charge of the elected state government in the national capital, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules the three municipal corporations.

AAP also protested outside the BJP headquarters in Delhi last week.

Until 2012, Delhi used to have one municipal corporation — the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). It was bifurcated by the Congress’ then-CM, the late Sheila Dikshit, with the North and South bodies receiving 104 wards each and the East 64 wards.
