Anna Mae Bullock, who made her debut in the 1960s with classics including “Proud Mary” and “River Deep, Mountain High,” was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, near the village of Nutbush in 1939.
After leaving an abusive marriage in 1978, Turner found even more success as a solo performer in the next decade. As a solo artist, she was elected into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 after selling 100 million records and winning 12 Grammys.
