Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, was born on June 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria, to a British-Nigerian father and a Nigerian mother. Tems was born on December 27, 1991, making him age 27. Tems was approached to work with the famous American singer Khalid when the song became an instant hit. She quickly accepted, and she and fellow Nigerian musician Davido released a remix of Know Your Worth. Tems’s self-produced debut EP, For Broken Ears, was released on September 25, 2020.
The album did well in Nigeria, Europe, and the United States immediately after its release. Damages, the lead song from the EP, was even more successful than Try Me had been for her. The following year, fellow rapper Wizkid collaborated with Tems to release the smash single Essence’s, the most successful single from his album Made In Lagos.
In addition to launching Tems to the top of multiple charts, the song also garnered her numerous awards and recognition, including the Billboard Hot 100, a Soul Train Music Award, the BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart, two NAACP Image Awards, and a Grammy Award nomination for Best Global Music Performance.
Furthermore, famed Canadian-American artist and rapper Drake heard “Essence” and offered Tems to work with him on a future project.
