Jack Black from Jumanji will play the wicked Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key will play Toad. Charlie Day, from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, will play Mario’s brother Luigi. And Donkey Kong, the famous gorilla, will be voiced by Seth Rogen. Some players were dismayed to hear that Charles Martinet, Mario’s longtime voice actor, would not be returning. Though her role is mysterious, Martinet will have a cameo in the film.

The classic plot of the Super Mario Bros video game involves Mario trying to rescue his beloved Princess Peach from Bowser’s castle after she has been kidnapped. We know that, unlike the 1992 live-action effort, which was set in New York City, this adaptation will take place in Mario’s fictitious home of the Mushroom Kingdom, which appears to have been authentically recreated from the games.
The trailer hinted at the film’s central conflict by showing Bowser and his army of Koopas attacking a penguin kingdom. Not much of Mario is shown, but he appears to emerge from a warp conduit into the Mushroom Kingdom, where he is introduced to Toad. The teaser introduces us to Jack Black’s interpretation of Bowser as he leads an army of Koopas on an invasion of a land ruled by Penguins to grab the invincibility star (an item many both rapid Mario fans and casual MarioKart players will know).
After Chris Pratt’s Mario lands for the first time in the Mushroom Kingdom and meets Toad, the video switches to them bouncing their way to Peach’s castle. After being pursued by a flock of Dry Bones, Charlie Day’s Luigi finally takes safety in a creepy-looking mansion (Luigi’s Mansion, anyone?). Unfortunately, the teaser only shows that much, so we’ll have to wait a little longer to see and hear Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.
