Stephen Smith Forensic Report

An internationally renowned cold case homicide forensic pathologist has concluded that an anthropologist should be consulted to learn the truth about what happened to Stephen Smith. Here you can read the history of Stephen Smith’s Case Files, The Report That Launched The Mu*der Investigation.

Associate professor and podcaster at the University of South Florida Erin Kimmerle have noted that anthropologists are increasingly being called upon to assist in difficult instances involving the exhumation and analysis of a body.

A medical examiner decided shortly after Smith’s body was discovered in the middle of the remote Sandy Run Road in South Carolina’s Lowcountry in 2015 that he had been a hit-and-run victim. Still, his mother, Sandy, has donated $104,545 in the past two weeks to have her son’s body exhumed to verify this.

Sandy Smith and the detectives with the South Carolina Highway Patrol have stated that they have always suspected that Stephen was the victim of a hate crime and a mu*der. Stephen, a gay man, was discovered by a stranger who was driving a wrecker in the middle of the night.

His tennis shoes were still attached to his feet, indicating he was not run over by a vehicle. When hit by an automobile, most victims lose consciousness and fall to the ground. Furthermore, Stephen’s car was many miles distant, with no gas and his wallet still inside, and there were no tire tracks or car parts to be found.

Kimmerle isn’t working on the Smith case but agreed to discuss her field. In determining the identities of 120 excavated bodies, she found that the presumed cause of de@th was incorrect in 20% of the cases. In reality, someone had killed them.

According to Kimmerle, a forensic anthropologist’s work entails more than just taking full-body x-rays and thoroughly studying the body. To determine where and, more crucially, how the bones were broken, they are cleansed and reassembled in the location where trauma was suspected.

She emphasized that it is possible to discern whether a person was killed by being struck by a car, beaten, or some other means just by examining their injuries. When someone is hit in the head, like Smith was, the skull reveals the weapon and the number of blows.

She also mentioned that bone chips and little fractures could be visible. Dr. Erin Presnell of the Medical University of South Carolina did the initial autopsy. It was discovered that Stephen had a massive wound on the right side of his forehead, a dislocated shoulder, and injuries to his left hand.

The investigation determined that a truck’s side mirror hurt him. Sandy Smith’s lawyer, Eric Bland, could not comment on whether a forensic anthropologist was engaged or would be hired.

He has told multiple media sources that he has already begun to hire experts and that a petition asking a judge to allow the exhumation will be filed soon. According to Kimmerle, the seven years since Stephen’s de@th have undoubtedly damaged some of the material that could provide vital insights.

Evidence such as fingernail scrapings and any foreign DNA found on his body can be reanalyzed in the future. She also mentioned that the new investigators would want to see what he was wearing and if there was any proof of sexual assault.

Highway Patrol Col. Michael Duncan, now retired, told News Nation that a rape kit was ordered hours after Stephen’s de@th was recovered, but no information about whether or not it generated any information has been disclosed.

The exam, he added, is available from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. This week, SLED revealed they were summoned to process the scene where Smith was discovered on July 8, 2015. Agents also witnessed Smith’s autopsy.

“Due to the medical examiner’s determination, the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office requested the South Carolina Highway Patrol to investigate Mr. Smith’s de@th,” the SLED news release said, per the reports from www.thestate.com.

After examining the Highway Patrol’s investigation file on the killings of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh and obtaining new information on June 23, 2021, SLED did launch an inquiry into the case. Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of mu*dering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, earlier this month and was given a life sentence.

The case, which SLED treats as a mu*der, has recently received more workforce. During the first investigation into Smith’s de@th, Murdaugh appeared frequently; however, no proof has surfaced linking them to the mu*der.

Buster Murdaugh, Smith’s only surviving son and a classmate from high school, issued a statement denying any participation in his de@th this week.

“I unequivocally deny any involvement in his de@th, and my heart goes out to the Smith family,” he said in a statement released through his father’s criminal defense attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin.
