The popular Magic Kingdom attraction’s ongoing run will end on Sunday. To make room for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a ride based on the 2009 animated feature “The Princess and the Frog,” the ride will be permanently shuttered by Monday. The closure date for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which will replace Splash Mountain at Disneyland, has not yet been revealed. In October 1992, Splash Mountain debuted at Magic Kingdom.
The attraction, which takes place in a southern bayou, is a boat ride through several settings with animatronics of the Br’er Bear, Br’er Fox, and Br’er Rabbit characters. There is a 50-foot drop into the “Briar Patch” as part of the trip. The Splash Mountain characters are related to the contentious 1946 movie “Song of the South.” The movie has drawn a lot of flak for its use of racist tropes and its romanticized depiction of life on a plantation.

It is still kept secured in Disney’s vault today. In a March 2020 shareholders meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated, “I’ve believed, as long as I’ve been CEO, that ‘Song of the South’ was — even with a disclaimer — was just not suitable in today’s environment.” Splash Mountain will be transformed into an attraction themed on “The Princess and the Frog,” which includes Disney’s first Black princess, in 2020, according to a Disney announcement.

Walt Disney Imagineers will change the Old South of Splash Mountain into 1920s New Orleans for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. A year has passed since the events of the animated movie when the plot will resume. Tiana established her own restaurant before founding Tiana’s Foods, an employee-owned cooperative. The co-op is incorporated into the mountain, which will be transformed into a salt dome for the new ride.
In addition to music, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will include animated animals such as an otter, rabbit, beaver, and raccoon. The ride will also have a distinctive descent all its own. In 2024, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is scheduled to debut in Disneyland and Disney World.

Has Disney Made Any Attempts To Lessen The Racism In “Song Of The South”?
During the George Floyd demonstrations in the summer of 2020, Disney stated that it would close Splash Mountain and “reimagine” it in the style of “The Princess and the Frog,” which stars Disney’s first Black princess. Disney CEO Bob Iger stated during a shareholder meeting in 2020, “I’ve believed, as long as I’ve been CEO, that ‘Song of the South’ was — even with a disclaimer — just not acceptable in today’s environment.” Iger affirmed that the controversial film wouldn’t be available on the Disney+ streaming platform.

Disney recognized it was negotiating risky territory even while the picture was being made in the 1940s and took precautions to lessen racist depictions of life on the plantation. A few years previously, in 1941, “Dumbo,” had drawn criticism for its portrayal of witty black crows, one of whom was named Jim Crow.
