Fans of the Adult Swim animated comedy Smiling Friends are excitedly awaiting the return of the series for Season 2, and the creators behind the series have given some important hints about new characters and other aspects of the show to look forward to in the upcoming episodes.
The first episode of the original animated series created by Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel appeared on Adult Swim with a surprise premiere within the course of a single evening, and ever since then, it has been at the center of the conversation for a lot of people who are fans of animation. Therefore, it did not come as much of a surprise when it was announced that the series would be given a second season at some point in the future.

Since the announcement, the creators of Smiling Friends have been hard at work on Season 2, and this weekend, at the Adult Swim Festival in Philadelphia (which Adult Swim shared highlights from), series co-creator Michael Cusack gave fans a sneak peek at what they can expect to see in the upcoming season.
Secrets regarding crucial plot points have been kept under wraps, but it sounds like the show will continue adding to the wacky antics of the first season’s setting and characters. Cusack started off by saying, “You’re going to see weird characters, and you’re going to witness insane stuff.” “It will be a continuation of the first season without having an overly repetitious feel to it…
It makes for an interesting dynamic on the show to have to consider things like, “Okay, they’re treating depressed individuals, but we don’t want to make it seem like they’re assisting a guy who’s going to kill himself in every episode.” To have it be more of a sandbox show, in which you can see these amazing personalities and different parts of the town or the universe, is a challenge. I know I’m going completely around it because we want to keep it a secret, but basically, you’ll see a number of new characters.”
So, it’s not exactly a definite plan, but at least there’s more on the way! To see the previous episodes of Smiling Friends, you can now do so either by streaming the show with HBO Max or by tuning in to Adult Swim on a variety of weeknights. Officially, the series is titled,
“The characters in Smiling Friends work for a strange and colorful company whose mission is to provide joy to the globe. Creators Michael Cusack (YOLO: Crystal Fantasy) and Zach Hadel (Hellbenders) teamed together with Princess Bento Studio to produce the animated series.”
