Some Pc Games Have Specs That Are Getting Out Of Hand

In the last few years, the least amount of RAM you needed to play the newest PC games was somewhere between 8 and 16GB. Unless you’re talking about two very strange exceptions, both of which are games from or for the PlayStation 5. Last month, we found out that Returnal, a game that came out in April 2021 for the PS5, would be coming out for the PC in 2023, with recommended specs that “ask for an eye-popping 32 gigabytes of ram.”

32GB! What the…? Even though that was just the recommended amount—the minimum is still a hefty 16GB—it stood out not only because it needed so much space, but also because, let’s be honest, it didn’t seem like the kind of game that would need that much space compared to its peers. But since it was made for the PS5, most people just thought it was because the game was made for a weird console first and went on with their lives.

Now, though, Square Enix’s Forspoken is doing almost the same thing. This game is also coming to the PlayStation 5, but it will also be available on the PC at the same time. It needs at least 16GB of RAM (just to run at 720p on a PC! ), but 24GB is recommended and 32GB is needed if you want to play at the highest settings. It was one thing for Returnal to be a port of a PS5 game, but Forspoken has both a console version and a PC version, so it can’t use that as an excuse.

There’s too much RAM here. I bought a brand-new gaming PC in 2020, and it came with 16GB of RAM, which was fine or maybe even a little too much at the time because games only ever asked for 8GB. Modern Warfare II, to give you an example, needs 16GB of RAM to run at Ultra 4K in 2022, though. It’s crazy that some PlayStation-related games (but almost none of the others) now need at least 16GB of space to play. Sorry, Returnal and Forspoken, but neither of you will force me to buy new hardware just to play.

Sony has been doing a pretty good job of porting its games to PC lately. Games like Horizon and God of War have done well enough that ports will be an important part of PlayStation’s business going forward (The Last Of Us, for example, is coming in March). All of those games, though, came out on the PS4 and had pretty good specs. If this is the amount of RAM needed to bring PS5 games to the PC (and I’m not saying it is, I’m just saying this is a pattern), Sony’s future ports might not go as smoothly.

While we’re talking about Forspoken, a demo was just put out, and changes were made to the game based on what fans said. You may keep yourself up to date with all of the most recent news by visiting our website, Talkxbox.
