Hunger Games Prequel Trailer Debuts at Cinemacon

Fans of The Hunger Games, get ready! The first video for the long-awaited prequel to the highly praised series just came out at CinemaCon. The predecessor, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” promises to take us on a dark, sweeping trip with a story deep into where the Hunger Games originated.

Now that the video is out, Hunger Games fans are very excited and looking forward to what looks like it will be another exciting part of the series.

First look at “The Hunger Games” prequel revealed

Lionsgate publicly returns people to Panem for “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” a prequel set in the “Hunger Games” world.

At last, the odds favored those who went to CinemaCon on Thursday(Apr 27, 2023). That’s when the first teaser for the side story was shown at the yearly trade show for theater owners. At last year’s convention, the company only brought a short clip of “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” without any movie footage or even a cast name, leaving much to be desired.

Viola Davis, who plays Volumnia Gaul, the head game maker, starts the video by talking about “the creators of the Hunger Games themselves.” But this year’s dystopian event is different, says Casca Highbottom, head of the Academy.

“As a mentor,” Highbottom says, “Your job is to turn these people into spectacles, not survivors.” Based on the latest book by “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” takes place 64 years before Katniss Everdeen’s adventures, which Jennifer Lawrence made famous on screen.

In the new movie, the main character is a young Coriolanus Snow, who later becomes the cruel president of Panem. In the 10th Hunger Games, he is picked to help a poor tribute called Lucy Gray Baird. For anyone needing a reminder, the Hunger Games are a broadcast event where teens are randomly picked to fight to the death.

Lucy Gray’s song makes everyone pay attention to her during the reaping in the book. Snow thinks that with her skill and charm, they might be able to change the odds and win the games.

“You want to take care of me in that area? Start believing I can win,” Lucy tells her mentor. The trailer doesn’t show any clips of Lucy singing, but it does give a grim look at the familiar theme as the tributes find themselves in what might be the worst version of “hunt or be hunted.”

“What goes on inside…” Davis’s Volumnia Gaul says, “See how quickly civilization disappears?”

The TV show’s trailers from previous seasons are available for viewing.

Tom Blyth from “The Gilded Age” plays Snow, and Rachel Zegler from “West Side Story” plays Baird in the movie. Other group members include Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, Peter Dinklage, and Davis.

Francis Lawrence, who had already directed “Catching Fire,” “Mockingjay — Part 1,” and “Mockingjay — Part 2,” came back to direct “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” Michael Lesslie wrote the script. On Nov. 17, the origin story comes out on screens.

Adam Fogelson, an executive at Lionsgate, presented the clip and talked about the movie’s “massive fan base,” which “could not be more engaged or excited for this next chapter,” he said. “We talk about this a little bit like the way ‘Wicked’ sits in the ‘Wizard of Oz’ universe or ‘Episode One’ in fits in the ‘Star Wars’ universe,” he said. “Fans want to know the origin of this beloved story.”
