Gwen 17 YO Daughter of Rep. Sean Casten Dies!

Gwen Casten, the 17-year-old daughter of Illinois Rep. Sean Casten, has died, CBS Chicago reports. There will be no further comment from our office at this difficult time as the Casten family requests privacy,” Casten’s office said in an e-mail to supporters. It is very hard for parents to watch their children die.

According to a tweet sent out by her father at the end of May, she had just graduated from high school. A part of the young people’s gun control advocacy group March for Our Lives, her Twitter bio states that she co-directed the Illinois chapter in the state of Illinois.

Shortly before Casten’s congressional office announced the death of his daughter, Gwen, Casten’s campaign requested that all Illinois TV stations immediately remove his campaign spots from the air until further notice. After defeating Republican Congressman Peter Roskam in 2018, Downers Grove resident and congressman-elect Chris Casten, 50, is running for his third term in the newly drawn 6th Congressional District. Casten serves as a US representative for various nations.

Marie Newman, a freshman, and Charles Hughes, a former Nicor employee, are the other two candidates in the race. “Because of the loss of their daughter, the Casten family has my deepest sympathy. My thoughts and prayers are with Sean, Kara, and the Casten family “a statement from Newman reads. ‘ Her campaign ads will also be halted immediately, as will Newman’s website.

It was only after the Democratic majority of Springfield approved a congressional remap that put Newman in the heavily Hispanic 3rd District, represented by Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia. In 2020, Hughes, a former alderman in Chicago’s 23rd Ward, ran against Newman in the state’s 3rd Congressional District, but he came in fourth with just 2.3 percent of the vote.

The Hughes campaign did not respond to a request for comment right away. Here’s a tweet from his official account:
