Fimbulwinter, a vast winter that spans three summers, is ending three years after the events of the last game, ushering in the prophesied Ragnarök. In an effort to save Ragnarök and learn more about his son Atreus’ secret identity as Loki, Kratos and his son Atreus, now a teenager, set off on a journey across the nine realms. They are on their way to meet the Norse God of War, Tr, who was thought to be long dead. Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, and his former ally-turned-enemy Freya, who is seeking vengeance for the loss of her son Baldur, will be their main antagonists.

At the conclusion of the God of War game that was released in 2018, a hint was given that a sequel would be coming. The game finished with Ragnarok on the horizon, and there was also a secret ending that revealed a vision of the god Thor confronting Kratos and Atreus at the end of Fimbulwinter.  Although he did not formally announce a new game at the moment, that game’s director, Cory Barlog, confirmed that the 2018 installment would not be Kratos’s last game, and it was later announced that further games would continue to be set in the Norse environment and involve Atreus.

In April 2019, a teaser was released in the form of a PlayStation 4 dynamic backdrop theme. On the side of the boat that Kratos and Atreus were traveling on, runes that translated to “Ragnarok is coming” were written in runic script.  At the same time, in order to commemorate the first year anniversary of the release of the previous game, Barlog posted a thread of tweets on Twitter with pictures and a statement concerning the development process; some fans noticed that the first letter of each tweet spelled out “Ragnarok is coming.”

On September 16, during the event known as the 2020 PlayStation 5 Showcase, it was formally announced that a new God of War will be coming out in 2021 for the more recent console.  Although the name of the sequel was not officially revealed in the brief trailer, which featured a voice-over by Christopher Judge, the actor who plays Kratos, the trailer did mention that “Ragnarok is coming,” which is consistent with the prior teasers. Because of this, some outlets came to the conclusion that the name of the game would be God of War:

Ragnarok; however, at the time, Sony had not yet verified this information. The tagline gave the impression that this would be the beginning of Ragnarok in the God of War universe. Ragnarok is a chain of events that, according to Norse mythology, brings about the end of the world and the deaths of the Norse gods.

The PlayStation 5 version of the game was the only one that was mentioned when the game was initially revealed in September of 2020. However, after Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) revealed their plans to support their previous console until at least 2022, speculation began on whether the new God of War would see a cross-gen release on the PlayStation 4 (PS4), as some other titles that were initially thought to be PlayStation 5
