Fallout 5 Confirmed or Cancelled? Here’s What We Expect

Fallout 5 is officially confirmed. That’s a sentence we’ve been meaning to write for a while. With Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 in the works, nothing was definite until today. However, Bethesda announced on June 14, 2022, during E3, that Fallout 5 would follow after The Elder Scrolls 6. While the latter is still in pre-production, we can finally begin putting together the nuts and bolts of our next foray into the irradiated, post-apocalyptic wasteland proper. We’re probably a long way from a Fallout 5 release date, but here’s everything we know so far – followed by everything we’d want to see if and when Fallout 5 does come.

Again, it’s doubtful that we’ll see a Fallout 5 release date very soon – but with Fallout 5 announced, we can now speculate on its release timetable. Starfield is set to release in the first half of 2023 and is obviously Bethesda’s current focus. Following that, expect the publisher to start building anticipation for its upcoming Elder Scrolls title, The Elder Scrolls 6. The latter is still in pre-production as of summer 2022, so it, too, is likely some time away from clear release date. After all of this, expect to see additional details about a Fallout 5 release date.

Fallout Game Series: What it’s all about?

Fallout is a series of post-apocalyptic role-playing video games (and subsequently action role-playing games) developed by Interplay Entertainment. The series is set in the twenty-first, twenty-second, and twenty-third centuries, and its atompunk retrofuturistic setting and artwork are inspired by the post-war society of 1950s America, with its mix of optimism for technological advancements and the looming terror of nuclear devastation. Wasteland, a 1988 game produced by Interplay Productions, is considered the series’ spiritual successor.

The fallout was created by Black Isle Studios and published in 1997, followed by Fallout 2 the following year. The tactical role-playing game Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel was developed by Micro Forté and 14 Degrees East. Interplay shuttered Black Isle Studios in 2004 and proceeded to make Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, an action game with role-playing aspects for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, sans Black Isle Studios. Bethesda Softworks produced Fallout 3, the third game in the main series, and was followed by Obsidian Entertainment’s Fallout: New Vegas. Fallout 4 was launched in 2015, and Fallout 76 was released on November 14, 2018.

Previous Fallout variants have been released for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles, with Fallout 4 receiving a separate VR edition for the HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality, and Valve Index. It remains to be seen if this widespread support will extend to Fallout 5, but if it follows in the footsteps of its immediate predecessors – Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 – it will initially be available on Game Pass, Xbox Series X, and PC.

In late 2021, director and executive producer Todd Howard said that Bethesda had a “one-pager” for Fallout 5, although it is still a long way off. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to get the rumor mill going, with series fans speculating about Fallout 5’s likely location, plot, and gameplay elements.

Howard told IGN at E3 2022: “Yes, Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production, and we’ll be doing Fallout 5 after that, so our schedule is very packed for the foreseeable future. We have some other projects that we look at from time to time… [these games] do consume time. I truly wish they were out sooner; we’re working as hard as we can, but we want them to be the best they can be for everyone.”

Everything we’d want to see in Fallout 5

So far, this is all we know about Fallout 5. Everything below is what we want from Bethesda’s next post-apocalyptic adventure, guided by what we believe worked best in prior games as well as some fresh elements we think would fit well with the tone and setting of the games up to this point.

1. Restore the Karma system.

The Karma system has been a prominent part of the Fallout series since Fallout 1, yet it was one aspect that did not make it into Fallout 4. The karma system truly makes you feel like your decisions have an impact on the world around you. If you go about killing everyone, you’ll have a bad reputation, and people will perceive and treat you differently as a consequence. It adds a greater degree of immersion to the RPG portion of the game and makes you think again about the decisions you make. Without Karma, it seemed like every decision you made in Fallout 4 merely served to influence how your friends saw you, which felt a bit hollow in contrast.

2. Keep multiplayer out and bring co-op in

Fallout 76 has several things going for it, but if it’s taught us anything, it’s that multiplayer isn’t always the solution. The Fallout series has always been a solid single-player offering, and with so many multiplayer games on the market, it’s hard not to hope Fallout remains loyal to its origins. We shouldn’t be too concerned since Howard has previously said that it would most likely be single-player centered, but it would be nice to see co-op play featured with single-player a la Dark Souls 3.

3. A more polished and sophisticated building system

Building settlements in Fallout 4 was a terrific new feature that finally gave all that stuff laying about a purpose, but it’d be good to have this polished and tuned so it’s a bit less cumbersome in parts – although some of the finest Fallout 4 towns have overcome the peculiarities. Using a controller to place large sheets of metal in precisely the correct place might be a challenge at times. While colony construction is a lot of fun, the mechanics and UI might need some fine-tuning to make it easier to operate in Fallout 5.

4. Provide us with additional conversation options

Variety is the spice of life, as the saying goes, so we’re all for additional options in the upcoming Fallout. As entertaining as the snarky option may be, the choice of just four alternatives to respond within Fallout 4 seemed a bit thin at times, and although a comparable amount of variety was available in prior releases, it’d be nice to see the next offer an additional helping. Having additional options can’t harm you, and it will only add to the sense that you have influence over how your character will be.

5. Provide us with a whole new environment to investigate.

As intriguing as the Commonwealth was, we hope Fallout 5 will continue the series’ tendency of presenting us with new settings. A new setting keeps everything feeling fresh and exciting, and it’s always intriguing to see a new locale with Fallout’s retro-futuristic flair. From Washington DC in Fallout 3 to New Vegas in Fallout: New Vegas to Boston in Fallout 4, the prospect of being able to explore what a new locale has to offer makes the prospect of the next Fallout all the more appealing.
