Fairfax County Police End Tense Standoff with Armed Woman and Suspect

An armed lady and abduction suspect was taken into custody by police after a standoff in the Hybla Valley area of Fairfax County lasted for over two days. On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, morning’s 7400 block of Richmond Highway, a woman police says was experiencing a mental health crisis barricaded herself inside a car.

Over 34 hours were spent on the scene using sirens by crisis negotiators and other Fairfax County law officials. They recorded announcements from the family to get the woman to surrender, according to the reports of fox5dc.com.

Richmond Highway was blocked off through traffic between Lockheed Boulevard and Boswell Avenue. Wednesday morning’s delayed start timings were a result of the reroutes.

The woman was arrested at about 12:15 a.m. The road was finally cleared at about 2:30 a.m. on Thursday (March 30, 2023). A firearm was also reportedly located and retrieved by police. Later on Thursday, authorities in Charles County, Maryland, named the woman, 29-year-old Brittany Copelin.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office had requested a police check on Copelin, so that’s why they were there at first, according to the police. The wellness check in Alexandria’s 7200 block of Fordson Road was interrupted when a lady approached the officers, saying that Copelin had abducted her on March 24 in Maryland.

After searching for Copelin, police found her vehicle parked in a lot on Richmond Highway. The officers chased for a short distance before the automobile stopped on the Richmond Highway and Arlington Boulevard service road.

Authorities evaluated Copelin after his arrest and sent him to an adult facility. Copelin has been charged with multiple crimes in Fairfax County, including kidnapping twice and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. In addition to the allegations filed in Alexandria, Copelin is now facing kidnapping charges in Laurel, Maryland, where police say they met the woman during the health check.

The events leading up to the suspected kidnapping are still being investigated. Copelin is being jailed in Fairfax County without bond at this time.
