On November 20, 1976, Dominique Dawes was born to Loretta and Don in Silver Spring, Maryland. She started gymnastics at age 6 with teacher Kelli Hill, and by age 9 she had already won her first competition.

When Dawes was ten years old, she was already a junior elite gymnast. In 1988, she entered the junior level of the US National Championships for the first time, and she placed seventeenth in the all-around.
