The music diva Madonna was supposed to co-write and direct a biopic on her own life at Universal, but IndieWire has learned that the project is no longer in development at the company. When Madonna announced a world tour that will begin in July, rumors suggested Julia Garner’s role as the “Like a Virgin” singer in the movie was put on hold. The project was first unveiled by Madonna and Universal in 2020, but work on it came to a halt in 2017. The musical’s script was written by Diablo Cody, with a revision by Erin Cressida Wilson.
Following the announcement of the collaboration, Madonna even posted pictures of her writing sessions with Cody. Garner, renowned for “Inventing Anna” and “Ozark,” reportedly competed in a boot camp of singing and dancing with other rising stars before landing the position. Bebe Rexha, Florence Pugh, and Alexa Demie were among the other celebrities who joined and tried out for the position. Universal declined to respond. Insiders told Variety, which broke the story, that Madonna still hopes to one day direct a film based on her life. Along with executive producers Sara Zambreno and Guy Oseary, Madonna’s longtime manager, Amy Pascal worked as a producer on the Madonna biography. Previous films directed by Madonna include “Filth and Wisdom” (2008) and “W.E.” (2011). In a previous interview, Madonna said the movie will cover “the beautiful trip that life has taken me on as an artist, a singer, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her place in this world,” even though the music would be the main focus.
Older social media hints claimed the movie’s title might be “Little Sparrow.” Early draughts of the movie were said to have concluded around the time of the 1990 Blond Ambition tour, according to a previous THR article.
