American actor, comedian, and writer Bill Murray is also a writer. He was born William James Murray in Wilmette, Illinois, the sixth of nine children of lumber salesman Edward Joseph Murray II and Lucille (Collins), a mailroom clerk. He has Irish ancestry. Actors Brian Doyle-Murray, Joel Murray, and John Murray are among his siblings. He and the majority of his siblings worked as caddies to help pay his tuition at the Jesuit institution Loyola Academy.
While attending that school, he participated in athletics and performed some acting, but, in his words, he “screwed off” a lot. He enrolled at Regis College in Denver to study pre-medicine but left after being found in possession of marijuana. He later joined Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, and John Belushi on the National Lampoon Radio Hour.
