Pirates of Caribbean: At World's End

Who wouldn’t want to be Jack Sparrow with his twisted sense of humor? I was able to experience a small taste of Jack’s drunken swagger and insulting blurbs by playing the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End demo. Even though the title of this game is PoC: AWE, you’ll find the action also covers Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
After breaking out of Jack’s prison cell, the objective is to locate an iron bar and force open the door where Teague is being held. You will then release the other trapped pirates, battling prison guards along the way. You’ll need to break open all treasure chests as they contain useful and special items, including money bags and throwing knives.
When faced with an opponent, you must decide whether to hack at the enemies with your sword; shoot them (a maximum load of 3 shots at a time); throw knives at them; lob explosive barrels their way; grab and bodily hurl them; or perform an “Ole” move (you sidestep to avoid rushing enemies). There are three basic attacks: light sword attack, heavy sword attack and item attack.
Located in the upper left-hand corner is your HUD. This will display your health, the number of bullets, and number of throwing knives. Your health is depicted by a ring around the skull. Each block of the ring represents a section of health. Health pickups (metal hearts) are located throughout the level.
The control scheme is a smidgen on the confusing side. Y button grabs and throws an enemy. X will punch during a fight. B jumps. LB is used to not only pick up items, but also to use objects. RB will shoot. RT serves multiple purposes. When pressed, it’ll cause you to sprint while moving; if standing still, you can stab your sword into items to move them; when hanging from ledges or crossing small walkways, you can save yourself from falling. Back button will access and exit the Captain’s Log (your objectives and map). To hoist a barrel at an enemy, you would press LB (to pick up), Y (to throw) and then RB (to shoot and explode the barrel). I caught myself numerous times blowing myself up instead of the enemies. You can also place barrels in front of barricades and use your sword to ignite. Just run away fast!
After several fights against prison guards and traversing cliff walls, Teague pushes you into the ocean – Jack Sparrow is then seen floating in a coffin (remember this from the movie?). You then watch a cutscene wherein you’ll see Jack’s father and Will. Orlando Bloom’s face is dead-on. The graphics were well done from Jack’s beaded dreads to his hands. While standing still, you’ll notice Jack’s fingers move independently. At times, it was like being in the movie; the visuals looked that good. On the flipside, walking felt jerky and very unnatural. Running was quite comical to watch. The camera angles weren’t the best, either.
Voice acting was not provided by the original cast of PoC, but it is straight-up awesome nonetheless It’s hard to believe that you’re not listening to Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom. The music fit in well with PoC, but I was ready to turn it off. I’m hoping the full game has a grander range of tunes.
The Outlook:
Aside from confusing button mashing experiences, I am looking forward to PoC: AWE. I truly believe the humor and gameplay will outweigh the frustrating “oh crap, which button was that again?” oaths. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End by Disney Interactive Studios is slated to hit the shelves on May 22nd. When it drops, you’ll be able to play through Will’s perspective, Jack’s and finally through Elizabeth’s. PoC: AWE appears to have what it takes to be a very entertaining title.
