Joytech Sharp Shooter

I’ve been a huge fan of light gun games since the first time I played Duck Hunt and Hogan’s Alley on the NES. House of the Dead and Silent Scope are two of my all time favorite arcade games. Both of these have come to the Xbox since it debuted and both can be used with a light gun. Lik-Sang sent me a Joytech Sharp Shooter light gun to try out so I picked up a copy of The House of the Dead III and proceeded to go zombie hunting.

The Sharp Shooter is one of the best looking light guns I’ve ever seen. It looks like a generic semi-automatic hand gun with a muzzle brake. It even has a detachable red dot scope on top that lights up when it’s plugged in. While it does look cool, it doesn’t really aid your accuracy that much. I ended up taking it off so I could get a clearer sight picture. Control wise, a small D-pad is situated on the back of the gun along with the X, Y, Start and Back buttons all within easy reach. There are three B buttons, one on each side of the gun and one in the bottom of the grip. Since B is typically set to reload this makes keeping bullets in your firearm a piece of cake. There is also a switch located on the left side that lets you set the gun to auto-reload and auto-fire. I guess in some games it might be good, but it was kind of pointless in House of the Dead. Lastly, the cord is extra long which lets you get a comfortable distance away form the TV.

Overall the Sharp Shooter is fairly accurate when calibrated properly. It’s also very well constructed and should survive lots of trigger pulls. If you’re looking for a light gun that works well and doesn’t look like a toy then it’s a good bet, but he fact that it’s a thirty dollar accessory that you’ll use for three games at most lowers my opinion of it a bit. Even though I really dig light gun games I’d rather shove quarters into the arcade machine than lay out the cash to bring the experience home.
