Founded in 1989, Atomic released its first game in 1991. Since that time, Atomic has created 14 products that comprise the V for Victory, World at War and Close Combat series. Each of these games has garnered numerous awards, including Game of the Year (Strategy Plus magazine, 1991), Software Showcase Award (International Consumer Electronics Show, 1994), the Best of Everything Award (Computer Life, 1996), and Award of Merit for Technical Art (International Technical Art Competition, 1998), and Wargame of the Year (PC Gamer, 1999). Atomic's Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far was included in PC Gamer magazine's Top 50 Computer Games of All Time list.

In 2003, the United States Marine Corps released Atomic's "Close Combat: Marines", the first game of commercial origin to be developed with the US Marines and released throughout the fleet. That game is now being used as a tactical training tool within the Marine Corps and at the US Military Academy at West Point.

In February of 2004, GameSpy named Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far as one of the “Top 10 Strategy Games of All Time.”
